About VND files

The .vnd extension is a source of confusion because it serves two completely different purposes. In the industrial sector, it is a proprietary vector design file created by Vision Numeric (now Gravotech) software like Type3 or Gravostyle. These files contain 2D/3D vector paths used for CNC engraving, routing, and laser cutting. They are notoriously difficult to share because they are locked to the specific CAM software and often require a hardware dongle to open.

However, for many everyday users, a .vnd file is actually a download error. The extension stands for "Vendor," and appears when web browsers or apps (like Signal or email clients) truncate a MIME type (e.g., application/vnd.ms-powerpoint or application/vnd.android.package-archive). Instead of saving as PPTX or APK, the system lazily saves it as .vnd. This leaves you with a file your computer cannot recognize.

The VND Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VND converter.
