About EMM files
The .EMM file extension is primarily used for mind map documents created by brainstorming software like Wondershare EdrawMind (formerly MindMaster) and MindManager. These files store hierarchical text, node relationships, and styling data for visual diagrams. Structurally, EdrawMind .EMM files are often compressed ZIP archives that contain XML code and media assets. In completely different contexts, the .EMM extension also acts as a 3D model material file for video games like Dragon Ball Xenoverse, or as an effect mapping file for the MikuMikuDance plugin.
The main disadvantage of the .EMM mind map format is vendor lock-in. It is a highly proprietary, closed format. You cannot open these files natively in web browsers or standard text editors. Users who do not have a paid software subscription or the specific desktop client installed simply cannot view the mind map. Furthermore, because multiple independent programs use the exact same .EMM extension but format their internal data differently, software compatibility is a major pain point.
To share your mind map with colleagues or clients, you must convert the .EMM file to standard, universal formats like PDF, PNG, or JPG. Converting to these static formats flattens the diagram. This means you will lose interactive features like expanding or collapsing branches, but the visual information becomes immediately readable on any device without downloading specialized software.
Because .EMM files are highly application-specific, standard third-party online converters often fail to process them. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the complex node data. Since many of these files are internally ZIP archives containing readable XML, our tool can inspect the file and show the embedded text or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your EMM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The EMM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our EMM converter.
