About VGL files

The .VGL file extension is primarily used for Volume Graphics project files. Created by Volume Graphics GmbH, these files are managed by high-end 3D analysis software like VGStudio MAX. They store project settings, analysis results, and configuration data for 3D volume (voxel) models derived from industrial CT scans. A secondary, highly obsolete use for the .VGL extension is the Genus VGA graphic library file format used by DOS-era software from Genus Microprogramming. The major drawback of the .VGL 3D format is its highly proprietary, closed-ecosystem design. It is not a standard 3D mesh file. Opening a .VGL file requires a specialized, highly expensive software license. Standard CAD programs and web browsers cannot read it. Furthermore, it acts as a project wrapper, relying on massive external volume data files (like VOL). Sharing just the .VGL file usually results in broken links and missing geometry. To effectively share the 3D data, you must use VGStudio MAX to export the voxel data into standard surface mesh target formats like STL, OBJ, or PLY. Standard online converters fail to process .VGL files because the format is locked and lacks standalone polygon data. Explain why this file format is difficult to open or convert: Emphasize that often only the original software can properly read or export the data. However, convert.guru can still identify the file format, inspect the file, and show text or internal content. Because modern .VGL files are internally built on the GZIP architecture, our engine can unpack the wrapper. Just drag and drop your file to see what it is and convert it if supported. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your VGL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted VGD, PCA and UINT16_SCV files.

The VGL Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VGL converter.
