The .em file extension is a dual-purpose format that most commonly represents a Saved Email Message. Ideally, these files function identically to the standard EML format (RFC 822), storing the email body, headers, sender details, and attachments in a plain text structure. However, users often encounter .em files as truncated or non-standard exports from legacy email clients or backup systems (sometimes associated with older 'ENAGE' or G-Mail exports). The primary problem is that modern operating systems like Windows 11 and macOS do not automatically associate .em files with email clients like Microsoft Outlook or Mozilla Thunderbird. Users are forced to manually rename the file to eml or select a program every time.
A secondary, rarer use (approx. 0.9%) is as an Encore Menu Template created by Adobe Encore, the now-discontinued DVD/Blu-ray authoring tool included with Adobe Creative Cloud versions CS3 through CS6.
