About SER files
The .SER extension is shared by two completely different file types, often causing confusion.
1. Java Serialized Object (Most Common)
For developers and data engineers, a .SER file is a Java Serialized Object. This is a binary snapshot of a Java object saved to a disk (a process called "serialization").
- The Problem: These files are opaque binary blobs. You cannot open them in a text editor like Notepad to see the data inside. They are also strictly tied to the version of the Java class that created them; if the
serialVersionUID doesn't match, the file is useless. - The Solution: To inspect the data, you must "deserialize" it. Developers use libraries like jdeserialize or custom scripts to convert the binary structure into human-readable JSON, XML, or plain Text format.
2. Astronomy Capture Video (High Conversion Intent)
For astrophotographers, a .SER file is a Lucam Recorder video sequence. This format is preferred over AVI in planetary imaging because it supports 16-bit pixel depth (preserving more dynamic range) and ensures no lossy compression artifacts.
- The Problem: Standard media players like Windows Media Player or VLC often cannot play .SER files because they lack the specific codec support for raw 16-bit astronomical data. The files are also massive due to the lack of compression.
- The Solution: To view or share these videos, use specialized tools like PIPP (Planetary Imaging PreProcessor) or Siril to convert .SER to standard AVI or MP4. For image stacking, you can extract individual frames to TIFF or FITS.
