Extract text from 3D scan or export files (DP)
To convert DP data files to another format, you need DotProduct Dot3D or other 3D software.
To convert other file formats to the "3D Scan Point Cloud" file type, you need software like DotProduct Dot3D or a similar tool.
.DP files most frequently serve as heavily compressed 3D scan point clouds generated by DotProduct Dot3D software. Alternatively, they frequently appear as Oracle Data Pump export files used for large-scale database migrations, or as Eclipse Kura IoT deployment packages.
The current format presents severe limitations depending on its origin. The 3D .DP files are proprietary, vendor-locked containers that require a specialized, paid license to view or edit. Oracle Data Pump files are complex, proprietary binary dumps that cannot be read as plain text and require an active Oracle Database instance and the impdp utility to restore. Users usually need to convert these files to escape vendor lock-in and share data across standard platforms.
For 3D scans, the best target formats are standard PLY, E57, or XYZ. Converting to these universally supported formats ensures compatibility with standard CAD software. However, you will lose the proprietary compression advantages, resulting in massive file sizes. For database files, users usually want SQL or CSV, but direct extraction from an Oracle dump is extremely difficult without the native engine.
Standard online converters fail to process .DP files because the format is a closed, proprietary binary container, meaning only the original software possesses the exact logic to decode the geometry or database schemas.
