About VGA files

The .vga file extension is a highly fragmented format primarily associated with the Video Graphics Array standard from the early PC era. Typical use cases fall into three categories: raw 16-color or 256-color bitmap screen dumps, legacy MS-DOS system display fonts, and proprietary data archives for 1990s video games (such as The 7th Guest, X-COM: UFO Defense, and games built on the LucasArts SCUMM engine). Because early operating systems lacked strict file-naming standards, developers frequently co-opted the .vga extension for entirely unrelated purposes, including Atari ST disk images and niche business databases.

Working with .vga files today is highly frustrating. They are entirely proprietary and obsolete. Modern operating systems and web browsers cannot natively open them. Furthermore, raw VGA image files often lack a standard file header, meaning typical image viewers cannot determine the correct width, height, or color palette without manual configuration. Game-specific .vga files are essentially locked archives that demand reverse-engineered community extraction tools (like those provided by ScummVM).

To make these files usable, conversion is mandatory. For web distribution, archiving, and editing, raw VGA screen dumps should be converted to PNG or WebP to perfectly preserve their sharp, pixel-art graphics without compression artifacts. For legacy fonts, conversion to TTF or OTF is required to install them on modern operating systems. Drag and drop your file to analyze and convert it securely right in your browser.

The VGA Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VGA converter.
