About D2 files

The .d2 extension serves two distinct, unrelated communities: medical neurology and software development.

First, it is a proprietary EEG (Electroencephalography) data file generated by SIGMA NEUROWERK diagnostic systems. These binary files store multi-channel brainwave recordings used in clinical neurophysiology. Because the format is strictly proprietary to SIGMA Medizin-Technik, these files are 'locked' - they cannot be opened in standard viewers like Excel or generic media players. To analyze this data in research tools like MATLAB or EEGLAB, users must convert the .d2 file to a standard exchange format like EDF (European Data Format) or ASCII (CSV) using the original NEUROWERK software or specialized import tools like BrainVision Analyzer.

Second, in the tech sector, .d2 is a text-based source file for D2, a modern declarative diagramming language.
