About CPA files

The .cpa file format is highly fragmented, serving entirely different purposes depending on its origin. Most commonly, it is an obsolete ArC compressed archive originally developed by System Enhancement Associates (SEA), a Genomics Workbench plugin archive utilized by QIAGEN CLC bio, or a CADSTAR PCB archive generated by Zuken CADSTAR. Secondary uses include HMI project exports, Cisco Packet Tracer components, and Intel Graphics driver files.

The primary disadvantage of the .cpa format is extreme ambiguity. Because the extension is shared across bioinformatics, legacy DOS utilities, and CAD software, your operating system will rarely know how to open it. The legacy ArC format is practically dead and requires obscure command-line tools to extract. Meanwhile, opening a CADSTAR PCB file requires expensive, proprietary design software. If your file is a Genomics Workbench plugin, it is actually just a renamed ZIP file, but standard extraction tools will not recognize it by default.

To access the contents without the native software, you must convert it. For archive and plugin extraction, convert .CPA to standard ZIP or 7Z.
