About COPY files
A .copy file is most frequently generated by Unreal Engine during asset duplication, migration, or backup processes. While intended to safeguard data during Content Browser operations, these files often become a source of frustration for developers. They act as intermediate containers - sometimes binary, sometimes text-based (T3D) - that generally cannot be opened directly by external 3D tools like Blender or Maya. A major downside is that .copy files do not automatically re-associate with the engine if simply dragged back into a project folder; they often require specific import steps or manual renaming to uasset to be recognized. Outside of game development, this extension is used by Synology Drive and other synchronization tools to label temporary or conflicted copies of standard files (like documents or images). In these cases, the file is perfectly valid but locked behind the wrong extension. For archiving or recovering 'lost' data, users often need to convert the internal data to PDF (for text-based object properties) or standard image formats like PNG or WebP if the file is a renamed graphic.
