The .PSK extension primarily identifies an Unreal Engine Skeletal Mesh, a proprietary 3D format established by Epic Games for the Unreal Engine (generations 1 through 3). These files store structural geometry, bone hierarchies, and vertex weights necessary for animating game characters and assets. While critical for modding classic titles like Unreal Tournament or Mass Effect, .PSK files are technically obsolete in modern pipelines; they cannot be opened by standard 3D viewers or web browsers, and direct support was largely superseded by the FBX standard in newer engines.
Users frequently encounter .PSK files when extracting assets from game archives (often alongside PSA animation files).
