About USX files
The .USX extension serves two distinct, incompatible purposes, creating significant confusion for users.
1. Unreal Engine Static Mesh (Legacy)
The most common use is a compiled 3D asset package found in games built on older versions of Unreal Engine (specifically Unreal Engine 2), such as Lineage II. These files contain static meshes - geometry used for environments and props - packed in a proprietary binary format.
The Problem: Because these are "cooked" game assets, standard 3D software like Blender or Autodesk Maya cannot open them directly. They are locked to the game engine they were created for. Users often encounter these files when attempting to mod games or extract models for reference, only to find they are unreadable binary blobs.
The Solution: To work with these models, you must convert them to a standard interchange format.
- For Editing: Convert to OBJ or FBX using specialized extraction tools like UModel (UE Viewer) before importing into 3D modeling software.
- For Viewing: Web-based 3D viewers often support GLTF or GLB.
2. Unified Scripture XML
The second type is a text-based XML file used by the United Bible Societies and software like Paratext. This format (Unified Scripture XML) encodes biblical text with strict markup for translation and publishing.
The Problem: While .USX files are human-readable code, they are not designed for casual reading. Opening them in a web browser reveals raw XML tags rather than formatted chapters and verses.
The Solution:
- For Reading/Print: Convert the raw XML to PDF or DOCX to strip the tags and apply readable styling.
- For Web: Convert to HTML for immediate browser rendering.
Convert.Guru analyzes your USX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted BLUEPRINT, COPY and UAX files.
The USX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our USX converter.
