About CMR files

The .cmr extension is a fragmented format shared by three distinct industries: science education, video production, and gaming.

1. Coach Results File (Academic/Science):
Most commonly encountered by students and researchers, this version of the file is generated by Coach 7 (or the legacy Coach 6), a STEM learning environment used to collect data from sensors (e.g., pH, temperature, motion). The file acts as a proprietary container for experiment results, graphs, and models. The primary problem is that .cmr files cannot be opened directly in standard spreadsheet software like Microsoft Excel. To analyze this data outside of the Coach environment, users must open the file in the original software and export the data table to CSV or XLSX.

2. Camtasia Mac Recording (Legacy Video):
In rare cases, Mac users may encounter this as a legacy screen recording format from older versions of TechSmith Camtasia. Unlike modern TREC or MP4 files, these proprietary recordings are often locked to the specific version of the software that created them, making them difficult to play on modern media players like VLC.

3. Clonk Material Resource (Gaming):
For the gaming community, specifically modders of the Clonk series (e.g., Clonk Rage), the .cmr file is a packed resource container holding maps, scenarios, or object definitions. These are technically renamed ZIP archives. A common workaround is to rename the extension from .cmr to zip to extract the assets (PNGs, scripts) using 7-Zip.

Convert.Guru analyzes your CMR file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted CMR7, ZCMR, CR2, CBR, CDR, PNG, PDF, JPG, ICS and ZIP files.

The CMR Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CMR converter.
