About CM files
The .CM file extension is highly fragmented and serves multiple distinct purposes. Most commonly, it is a Cable Modem Configuration File formatted according to the DOCSIS standard, used by Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to provision network hardware via TFTP. Alternatively, it is used as an auto-clicker macro recording file (formatted as JSON) for the mobile app Clickmate, an automation project template (stored as a ZIP archive) for ZennoLab ZennoPoster, or even a standard Windows Command Script similar to BAT.
Handling .CM files is notoriously frustrating because the same extension hides completely different internal structures. DOCSIS configuration files are compiled binaries; opening them in a standard text editor reveals unreadable characters. They require specialized decompilation tools to read and cannot be modified by users to bypass ISP speed limits, as they are secured by digital signatures. Clickmate macros are locked to the mobile app environment unless manually parsed. ZennoPoster files require specific, expensive desktop software to execute.
To view or edit the contents of a .CM file, conversion is usually the most pragmatic step. DOCSIS binaries must be decompiled into plain TXT formats. Clickmate macros should be converted to standard JSON to view coordinate data in code editors. ZennoPoster projects can be renamed or converted to ZIP to extract their internal XML assets. Convert.Guru analyzes your CM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert CM file to KM, CSV, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG, CONF, DAT or DB, you can use Cisco IOS or similar software from the "Configuration and Automation Settings" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

The CM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CM converter.
