A .cm0013 file is an encrypted vault file created by the Clean Master app for Android devices. Developed by Cheetah Mobile, Clean Master used this proprietary extension to hide and secure user photos and videos inside a protected "Safe" or "Vault" folder on the device's storage.
The massive disadvantage of this format is its complete reliance on a discontinued and highly controversial application. Google permanently removed Clean Master from the Play Store in 2020 due to severe policy violations, ad fraud, and privacy concerns. Because of this, users are often left with locked .cm0013 files on old SD cards or backups and have no official, secure software to open them. Standard image viewers and video players will reject the files because the original file headers are obfuscated or encrypted by the app.
To regain access to your hidden memories, you must decrypt or restore these files to their original formats. For images, convert to JPG or PNG. For videos, convert to MP4.
Note: In rare cases (less than 1%), a .cm0013 file can also be a Samsung Smart TV Index file. Samsung TVs generate these hidden system files on attached USB drives to track media indexing. These system files contain no media and do not require conversion.
