About CM0012 files

The .cm0012 file is primarily a Cable modem device list utilized by Cisco CMTS (Cable Modem Termination System) hardware. It stores proprietary network configurations, device IDs, and hardware states. In other environments, it acts as a Configuration Management File for Western Digital devices or a Device ID file for CCleaner.

Users typically encounter this file when exporting network diagnostics, backing up router configurations, or digging into system software directories. The major disadvantage of the .cm0012 format is its proprietary nature. It is heavily fragmented across different vendors and cannot be natively opened by Windows, macOS, or standard web browsers. Opening it in a basic text editor usually yields garbled binary data alongside fragmented text strings.

When handling a .cm0012 file, the best conversion targets are plain text formats like TXT, CSV, or XML. Converting to these formats allows users to read the raw configuration logs and device MAC addresses. However, extracting this text permanently strips the proprietary binary structure, meaning the resulting file can no longer be imported back into the original hardware.

This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert because it is a closed, undocumented system file. Often, only the original hardware interface or software can properly read or export the full data. Standard online converters fail to process it. Just drag and drop your .cm0012 file into convert.guru to identify the format, inspect the file, and view any readable text. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your CM0012 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted CMDB, CM, OVPN, CONF and EHI files.
