About GFX files
A .GFX file primarily functions as a game user interface asset or script. The most widespread variant is the Autodesk Scaleform GFx format, a middleware solution game developers use to render heads-up displays (HUDs), menus, and minimaps. Another highly common variant is found in games developed by Paradox Interactive using the Clausewitz Engine (e.g., Crusader Kings II, Hearts of Iron IV), where .GFX files act as plain-text sprite definition scripts. In industrial contexts, .GFX files can also be Human-Machine Interface (HMI) graphical displays for Rockwell FactoryTalk View or HVAC system diagrams for Trane TRACE 700.
Historically, Scaleform assets were authored using Adobe Animate (formerly Flash Professional) and then processed into .GFX binaries. The core disadvantage of the .GFX format is its highly fragmented and proprietary nature. Standard image viewers and web browsers cannot open these files. Scaleform .GFX files are compiled binaries requiring deprecated game engine middleware to render. Paradox .GFX files contain no actual image data at all; they are merely configuration scripts linking to external DDS files. Attempting to open a .GFX file outside of its specific game or industrial software usually results in unreadable code or broken application links.
To make these files usable outside their native engines, conversion or extraction is strictly required. For Scaleform UI files, extracting internal assets to PNG or SVG is best for web use, while converting the binary back to SWF or FLA is mandatory for editing. For Paradox script files, converting to standard TXT or XML ensures maximum readability for modders. The GFX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GFX converter.
