About GFX files

The .GFX file extension primarily represents Autodesk Scaleform GFx data, a specialized vector graphics format used to create user interfaces (HUDs, menus, and overlays) for video games. These files are essentially highly optimized, compiled versions of Adobe Flash (SWF) files. While excellent for rendering high-performance game UIs in engines like Unreal or CryEngine, they pose significant challenges for casual users: they are proprietary binary files that cannot be opened by standard image viewers, web browsers, or even standard Flash players. Opening them usually requires specialized decompilers or the original game development tools.

A secondary but common use of the .GFX extension is in games developed by Paradox Interactive (e.g., Hearts of Iron IV, Stellaris). In this context, the file is a plain text script that defines how sprites and animations link to game assets. Users often fail to open these because the OS does not associate .GFX with text editors.

To work with these files, you must identify the specific type. For Scaleform assets, the best conversion workflow is to decompile them back to SWF or extract the embedded vector shapes and textures to PNG or SVG for editing in tools like Adobe Animate. For Paradox files, the solution is converting or simply renaming the extension to TXT to edit in code editors like Visual Studio Code. Industrial users may also encounter .GFX files in Rockwell Automation software, which are strictly locked to the FactoryTalk ecosystem.

Convert.Guru analyzes your GFX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted GUI, DCX, GPX, PNG, GGFX, DDS, JPG, GSFX, HPP, QFX, BINARY, YTD and TILL GFX files.
