About CFX files

The .cfx file extension is a classic example of a "filename collision," meaning it is used by multiple unrelated software ecosystems, creating significant confusion for users. Most commonly, consumers encounter this file as a Carfax vehicle history report or window sticker, which is often technically a standard PDF disguised with a custom extension. In the engineering world, it represents a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) case file used by ANSYS CFX to simulate fluid flow and heat transfer. Other uses include ChannelAdvisor commerce triggers (XML), StrategyQuant trading strategies (ZIP), and Flow-Cal measurement data.

The primary disadvantage of the .cfx format is its ambiguity and proprietary lock-in. A user trying to view a car history report often cannot open the file because Windows or macOS does not associate .cfx with a PDF reader. Similarly, engineering teams struggle to share large, complex ANSYS simulation results with clients who do not own expensive licenses. Proprietary databases like CodeBase or Flow-Cal further restrict data access to specific legacy applications.

To resolve these accessibility issues, the target format depends on the file's origin. For Carfax and window stickers, the best solution is converting to PDF, ensuring compatibility with Adobe Acrobat and all web browsers. For ANSYS simulations, users often need to convert data to CSV for Excel analysis or standard 3D formats like VTK for visualization in tools like Paraview. For StrategyQuant files, converting to ZIP allows you to unzip and inspect the contents.

Convert.Guru analyzes your CFX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted CXF, XCF, CPFX3, CFS, CSV, SH, PDF, TXT, DOCX, JPG, ZIP, GFX and XLSX files.

The CFX Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CFX converter.
