Convert CFS to another file type
To convert your CFS file to another format, you need Apache Lucene or other Database software.
Convert a file to CFS
To convert other file formats to the "Compound Index File" file type, you need software like Apache Lucene or a similar tool.
About CFS files
A .cfs file is most frequently a Compound File used by Apache Lucene, the powerful search engine library underpinning software like Elasticsearch and Apache Solr. These files function as virtual file systems, aggregating multiple index segments (frequencies, positions, vectors) into a single physical file to bypass operating system limits on open file handles. While efficient for machines, this format is a black box for users; it is binary-encoded, not human-readable, and cannot be opened with standard text editors. Users often encounter these files when troubleshooting search clusters or attempting to recover data from corrupted indices, finding themselves locked out of the underlying textual content.
Beyond search infrastructure, the .cfs extension is also used as a proprietary Game Asset Archive in titles like Perfect World, bundling textures and audio to prevent easy modification. Furthermore, in scientific research, it represents CED Signal Data files. To make this data usable, conversion is essential. For Lucene indices, the best workflow is converting to JSON, XML, or CSV for analysis using tools like Luke. For game archives, users typically convert embedded assets to PNG or WAV. For scientific data, converting to MAT (MATLAB) or TXT enables broader statistical analysis. Simply upload your file to identify the specific format and determine the correct conversion path.
Convert.Guru analyzes your CFS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert CFS file to MGD, CMS, GPD, MPH, ISO, IMG, DMG, VHD, VMDK, VDI, HDD or QCOW, you can use Apache Lucene or similar software from the "Search Index Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert VFD, DMG, OVA, IMA, VBOX, ADF, PVS, VHD, OVF, ISO, DSK or IMG files to CFS, try Apache Lucene or another comparable tool in the "Search Index Storage" category.
The CFS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CFS converter.
