Convert CDXML to another file type
To convert your CDXML file to another format, you need ChemDraw or other Vector Image software.
Convert a file to CDXML
To convert other file formats to the "Chemical Informatics XML" file type, you need software like ChemDraw or a similar tool.
About CDXML files
The .CDXML file type is the XML-based native format for ChemDraw, the industry-standard software for drawing chemical structures and reactions.
While .CDXML files are essential for retaining semantic chemical data (atoms, bonds, stereochemistry) during the research phase, they present significant hurdles for collaboration and publication. The format is highly specialized and proprietary, requiring a paid license for ChemDraw (now developed by Revvity Signals) to open or edit natively. Standard office software and web browsers cannot render these files, making them unsuitable for viewing on mobile devices or computers without specific scientific software installed. Furthermore, as an XML text format, they can become large and cumbersome compared to their binary equivalent (CDX).
To overcome these accessibility issues, conversion is the standard workflow:
For Publication & Print: Convert .CDXML to PDF or EPS to ensure vector-quality scaling in journals and posters.
For Web & Presentations: Convert to PNG or SVG for transparent backgrounds and easy insertion into Microsoft PowerPoint or websites.
For Data Exchange: Convert to MOL or SDF to ensure compatibility with other chemical informatics tools like Open Babel or RDKit.
Convert.Guru analyzes your CDXML file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert CDXML file to PDF, CDX, PDB, CSV, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG or CONF, you can use ChemDraw or similar software from the "Chemical Structure Drawing" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to CDXML, try ChemDraw or another comparable tool in the "Chemical Structure Drawing" category.
The CDXML Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CDXML converter.
