About CDM files
A .CDM file is most frequently a Conceptual Data Model created by SAP PowerDesigner (formerly Sybase). These files serve as high-level architectural blueprints for database structures, mapping out entities, relationships, and attributes using XML (in modern versions) or binary structures.
The biggest challenge with .CDM files is their proprietary nature. They are strictly design artifacts intended for PowerDesigner, a high-cost enterprise tool. You cannot simply open them in Microsoft Excel or a text editor to view the diagrams meaningfully. This is a common source of problems when sharing database schema designs with stakeholders, developers, or clients who do not possess a license. Additionally, version incompatibility is common; a file saved in a newer version of PowerDesigner often fails to open in older iterations.
To overcome these accessibility barriers, users typically need to convert .CDM files based on their immediate goal:
- For Documentation & Review: Convert to PDF or raster images like PNG/JPG. This allows stakeholders to visually review the Entity-Relationship (ER) diagrams without software installation.
- For Development: Convert to SQL (often via an intermediate Physical Data Model or PDM) or XML to extract the schema logic for database implementation.
- For Legacy Archives: If your file is significantly older and large (hundreds of MBs), it may be an NTI CD-Maker disk image. In this case, the practical move is converting to a standard ISO file to mount or burn the data using modern tools like PowerISO.
Convert.Guru analyzes your CDM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted DCM, COM, WEBP, PNG, CDW, JPG, ZIP, TXP, MOO, PDM and CBM files.
The CDM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CDM converter.
