The .BUF file extension is a generic container used to store raw 'buffered' data, making it highly context-dependent. Its two most common configurations serve vastly different industries: video gaming and financial accounting.

1. Game Asset Data (miHoYo / HoYoverse)

In titles like Honkai Impact 3rd, .BUF files store binary 3D asset data, specifically character blend shapes and texture coordinates. These files are optimized for the game engine's runtime performance, not for human readability.

The Problem: You cannot open these directly in standard 3D software like Blender or Maya. They lack standard headers found in OBJ or FBX files.
The Solution: To mod or view these assets, you must convert the binary streams into structured 3D formats like OBJ (for geometry) or JSON (for data analysis) using specialized community-created extraction tools.

2. BUSY Accounting Data

Used by BUSY Accounting Software, these files often act as data dumps or temporary transaction buffers encoded in UTF-16 (LE).

The Problem: While they contain vital financial records, they are often formatted as raw text streams that appear garbled in standard notepads.
The Solution: For auditing or reporting, these should be converted to CSV or XLSX (Excel) formats, typically by re-importing them into BUSY and using the built-in 'Export' function, or by parsing the text data if the structure is known.
