About BUF files
A .BUF file generally functions as a proprietary data buffer, but its exact purpose depends entirely on the software that created it. It is most commonly encountered as a 3D character blend shape or texture coordinate file in games developed by HoYoverse, or as an internal accounting data file used by BUSY Accounting Software. Developers may also see .BUF files generated by the Buf CLI for Protocol Buffers, while scientists use them for World Meteorological Organization BUFR data. Because .BUF is a generic extension for a buffer, the files are highly fragmented. HoYoverse .BUF files contain raw, undocumented 3D mesh morph targets that are impossible to open in standard 3D suites like Blender without specialized, community-built modding scripts. Accounting .BUF files are locked behind proprietary formats or UTF-16 (LE) encoding and require an active software license to parse. This lack of standardization means standard online converters will fail to process these files. Depending on the source, users typically want to convert 3D .BUF files to FBX or OBJ for modding, or accounting data to CSV. While standard conversion is exceptionally difficult because these formats are closed and proprietary, our tool can still help.
