The .BRF extension serves two distinct, incompatible purposes: a proprietary 3D resource archive and an accessibility document standard.
- Mount & Blade Resource File: Most commonly, this is a game asset container used by Mount & Blade: Warband. It packages 3D meshes, skeletons, and textures (DDS) into a single block to optimize loading times. The problem is that standard 3D software like Blender or Autodesk Maya cannot natively open or import these files, locking assets inside the proprietary format. To edit these resources, modders must use specialized community tools (like OpenBRF) to extract and convert the internal data into standard OBJ, DAE, or FBX formats.
- Braille Ready Format: In accessibility workflows, .BRF stands for Braille Ready Format. These are ASCII text files formatted specifically for Braille embossers. While they contain text, the characters map to Braille dot patterns (e.g., the letter 'a' might map to a specific symbol), rendering the content illegible to sighted users in standard editors like Microsoft Notepad.
