About BCF files

The .bcf extension primarily refers to the BIM Collaboration Format, an open standard developed by buildingSMART to streamline communication in construction projects. These files act as lightweight issue containers, storing comments, camera viewpoints, and snapshots (as PNG images) separately from the massive 3D model files (like IFC or RVT). While this allows architects using Autodesk Revit to exchange issues with engineers using Solibri or Archicad, the format presents a significant barrier: it requires specialized BIM software to view. Project managers and stakeholders without CAD tools cannot easily read the contained XML data or see the issue snapshots. To overcome this accessibility gap, users frequently convert BCF files to PDF reports for documentation, Excel spreadsheets for data analysis, or extract the internal images for email updates.

A secondary but significant use of the .bcf extension is in bioinformatics as the Binary Variant Call Format. This is a highly compressed binary version of the VCF text file, used to store gene sequence variations efficiently. While optimized for storage and machine reading by tools like BCFtools, it is unreadable to humans. Researchers often need to convert these files back to standard text-based VCF formats to inspect genetic data manually or process it with text-parsing scripts.

Convert.Guru analyzes your BCF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted BCFZIP, BCFV, BCP, ZIP, VCF, PNG, GBX, FLA, JPG, DB, PDF, TXT and EDDX files.

The BCF Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BCF converter.
