About BCF files
The .BCF file primarily serves as a BIM Collaboration Format file developed by buildingSMART. It acts as an open-standard issue tracker for 3D building information models (BIM). Instead of sending a massive 500MB 3D model to point out a design clash between a pipe and a wall, architects send a tiny .BCF file containing camera coordinates, screenshots, and comments. A secondary, highly technical use for .BCF is the Binary Variant Call Format, compressed with GZIP for DNA sequencing data via samtools. You can open architectural .BCF files using specialized software like Solibri or BIMcollab. Genomic files require bcftools. The core problem with .BCF files is their extreme niche dependency. If you do not have expensive BIM coordination software installed, you cannot view the architectural issues, comments, or screenshots inside. These files are useless to clients, project managers, or contractors who just want to read a task list. Furthermore, genomic .BCF files are binary and completely unreadable in standard text editors. To make these files readable for project management, you must convert them. For sharing architectural issues with non-technical teams, convert .BCF to PDF to generate a static report, or to XLSX and CSV to import tasks into Excel or Jira. For genomics files, convert .BCF to VCF to read the DNA variants in plain text.
