About BACKUP files
A .backup file is not a single, standardized format. Software developers frequently use this generic file extension to save copies of user data, databases, or device configurations. Common creators include MikroTik RouterOS for exporting router settings, the PostgreSQLpg_dump utility for database snapshots, and Android applications like ColorNote or Alpha Backup Pro for saving user profiles.
Because the extension is completely generic, operating systems like Windows or macOS do not know how to open these files by default. The main disadvantage of the .backup format is its extreme ambiguity: a file with this extension could be a proprietary binary blob, a compressed ZIP file, a plain JSON text file, or a complex relational database dump. Relying on this format for long-term archiving is incredibly risky if you ever forget which specific software generated it, as you cannot easily open it without its parent application.
To secure your data and guarantee future access, you must identify the underlying format and convert it into something universally supported. If the file is a compressed archive, converting it to ZIP allows native extraction on any computer. If it is a database dump, converting it to plain SQL or CSV ensures readability in any text editor or spreadsheet software. For raw text-based configuration files, a conversion to TXT is ideal.
Convert.Guru analyzes your BACKUP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert BACKUP file to RSC, SQL, TXT, BAK, OLD, TMP, TEMP, ARC, ZIP, TAR, GZ or 7Z, you can use MikroTik RouterOS or similar software from the "Generic Application Data Archive" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert SNAPSHOT, OLD, IMG, RESTORE, ISO, COPY, VMDK, TMP, VHD, BAK, ARCHIVE or RAR files to BACKUP, try MikroTik RouterOS or another comparable tool in the "Generic Application Data Archive" category.
The BACKUP Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BACKUP converter.
