About BACKUP files

A .backup file is a generic extension used by hundreds of different software applications to store copies of data for disaster recovery. There is no single industry standard for this format. Most commonly, these files contain custom-format database dumps created by the PostgreSQL pg_dump utility, proprietary configuration data for MikroTik RouterOS, or mobile app data from applications like ColorNote and Alpha Backup Pro. Because the extension is completely generic, the underlying file structure might be a ZIP archive, an SQL script, a JSON payload, or an encrypted binary blob. The main disadvantage of a generic .backup file is that you cannot open it natively in most operating systems. It acts as a proprietary black box. You must rely on the original software to read the data, which is highly frustrating if that software is obsolete or unavailable. Database administrators and everyday users frequently need to extract the data to read it on a new device or a different operating system. For database recovery or migration, convert .backup to SQL or CSV. For extracting Android mobile app archives, convert to ZIP or TAR. For generic text configurations, convert to TXT or JSON. Drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it securely right in your browser - free, online, and without installing software.

Convert.Guru analyzes your BACKUP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted RSC, BAK, BACKUPDATA, BACKUP2, BKUP, DB, EXAMSOBAT, TXT, BIN, DOCX, XLS, JDX and DAT files.

The BACKUP Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BACKUP converter.
