A .BKP file is a generic extension indicating a backup. Because hundreds of different software programs - ranging from Microsoft SQL Server and draw.io to various Android applications and AspenTech process simulators - use this extension, there is no single standard format for it.
The biggest drawback of a .BKP file is its ambiguity. Your operating system does not know which application created it, inevitably resulting in the frustrating 'Windows cannot open this file' error. Furthermore, because these files can exceed several gigabytes in size or contain proprietary binary data, guessing the parent software is time-consuming. Users are often locked out of their own data if they cancel their software subscription or lose access to the original hardware.
Often, developers simply rename standard file types to .BKP to prevent accidental tampering by end users. Under the hood, your file might actually be a compressed ZIP archive, an SQL database, or even a standard JPG image.
To bypass this limitation, you need to analyze the file's internal signature (magic bytes). If it is a hidden archive, convert it to ZIP for easy extraction. If it contains plain text data, convert to SQL or TXT to read the contents.
