About BKP files
The .bkp file extension is a generic label used by hundreds of distinct software applications to denote a backup copy of a file or project. Unlike standardized formats like JPG or DOCX, a .bkp file does not enforce a specific internal structure; it simply indicates the file's purpose - to preserve data in case of corruption or loss.
Commonly, .bkp files are created by renaming an existing file (e.g., document.docx becomes document.bkp), or they are compressed archives generated by utilities like Persoapps on Android or Microsoft SQL Server. Users often face the frustration of not knowing which program created the file, as a .bkp from a Korg synthesizer is completely incompatible with a .bkp from Busy Accounting software. This ambiguity creates a "black box" where the data is locked away without the original environment.
For general access, the most effective conversion target is ZIP, as many backup utilities utilize standard compression. If the file is a database dump, converting or renaming to SQL or TXT often allows administrators to view the schema. For visual data, such as diagram backups from draw.io, restoring to the original XML or PNG format is necessary.
Convert.Guru analyzes your BKP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted BAK, BKP2, BPK, BLD, ZIP, DRAWIO, TBKP, BDS, BK, CUPACEBKP, TXT, EXE and BCK files.
The BKP Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BKP converter.
