The .BKUP file extension is primarily used as a generic backup format, but its most common modern use is as an Android Wallpaper Backup file. Created by the Google Android operating system, these files silently store the current home screen or lock screen background.
The main disadvantage of the .BKUP format is that the extension completely masks the true nature of the file. Users attempting to open a .bkup file will find that their operating system does not know which application to use. For Android wallpapers, the file is actually a standard JFIF (JPEG) image hidden behind a generic extension. Other variants include system archives generated by the legacy Toshiba Backup Utility or SQLite write-ahead logs for discontinued apps like Yahoo! Messenger.
Converting a .bkup file depends entirely on its origin. If you have an Android wallpaper backup, the best targets are JPG or PNG so the image can be viewed natively on any device.
