Convert a file to AVP
To convert other file formats to the "NLE Project File" file type, you need software like Avid Media Composer or a similar tool.
About AVP files
The .AVP file extension is most frequently associated with Avid Media Composer, the industry-standard non-linear editing (NLE) software used in Hollywood film and television production.
The Problem: Users often mistake .AVP files for playable video files (like AVI or MP4). In reality, an .AVP is a Project File (or "bin" settings container) that weighs only a few kilobytes. It acts as a database containing metadata: edit decision lists (EDLs), timeline sequences, effect parameters, and pointers to the actual high-resolution media files. It does not contain video or audio data itself.
The Friction: Because the file only holds paths to media (e.g., C:\MediaFiles\Clip01.mxf), you cannot "convert" an .AVP file to MP4 using standard online converters or tools like VLC Media Player. Without the original source footage on the same computer, the .AVP file is useless and will appear as "Media Offline."
The Solution: To "convert" this file, you must open it in Avid Media Composer on the machine where the source footage is stored. From there, you can Export the timeline to a portable format like MOV (ProRes/DNxHD) or MP4 (H.264) for web use.
Secondary Format: In enterprise IT environments, an .AVP file may be an Avamar Package, a software update archive used by Dell Avamar backup systems. These are strictly for system maintenance and cannot be converted to media formats.
