About AVP files
The .AVP file extension primarily functions as an Avid Project File used by Avid Media Composer. It acts as the central hub for video editing sessions, storing project settings, user preferences, and pointers to external media bins. A secondary use is for Dell EMC Avamar software update packages, deployed on enterprise backup servers. Another rare use is for Avira AntiVir scan profiles. The biggest disadvantage of an .AVP video project file is that it is strictly proprietary and contains zero actual video data. The file size is typically very small because it only stores text-based metadata and file paths. Users constantly face the problem of trying to send an .AVP file to a client, only for the client to find they cannot open it or watch the video. Standard online media converters fail completely with these files because there are no audio or video streams inside to convert. To turn this project into a viewable video, you must open the .AVP in the original Avid software, link all the heavy MXF source media, and render the timeline out to a standard format like MP4 or MOV. If you need to migrate the edit to Adobe Premiere Pro, you must export an AAF or XML file instead. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible on convert.guru. Because this is a closed, proprietary format, direct conversion without the original software is virtually impossible. However, convert.guru can inspect the raw file header to verify if it is an Avid project, a Dell update package, or an Avira profile. If our analysis detects underlying text references, viewing those internal paths may still be possible.

The AVP Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our AVP converter.
