About AGIF files

The .agif file typically functions as either an Animated GIF created by web utilities like ezgif.com, or as an animation project file saved by Active GIF Creator. Often, an .agif is simply a standard GIF file that a web application has renamed to explicitly indicate animation. These files contain a sequence of raster image frames that play consecutively to form a looping animation.

When generated as a project file by Active GIF Creator, the .agif acts as a proprietary workspace. It holds raw image frames, custom layer metadata, and timing instructions before the user renders the final output.

Users frequently need to convert .agif files because the traditional GIF format suffers from severe technical disadvantages. It limits each frame to a maximum of 256 colors, causing aggressive color banding and poor image fidelity. Furthermore, it relies on legacy LZW compression. Files quickly balloon over 50MB for just a few seconds of footage, devastating page load times. Alternatively, if the file is a proprietary project, it requires a discontinued, obscure Windows application to view, making collaboration impossible.

We highly recommend converting .agif files to modern video formats like MP4 or WEBM. These formats provide hardware-accelerated decoding, 24-bit true color, and massively superior compression ratios. For web design, converting to WEBP retains the animated behavior at a fraction of the file size.

Project files are notoriously difficult to process because they are closed, proprietary formats. Standard online converters fail to process them because they expect standard image headers, not proprietary workspace data. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your AGIF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted AVIF, GIF, BDM, SPL and PZF files.

The AGIF Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our AGIF converter.
