About ASSETS files

.ASSETS files are compiled game asset bundles used primarily by the Unity game engine. They serve as archives containing serialized game data, such as 3D models, 2D textures, audio clips, animations, and scripts necessary to run a video game. These files are natively generated by the Unity Editor during the software build process to package resources efficiently for distribution.

Users typically need to convert or extract .ASSETS files when modding a game, datamining, or attempting to recover lost project data. The primary disadvantage of the .ASSETS format is that it is a proprietary, closed binary container (often using the internal UnityFS format). It is entirely unreadable by web browsers or standard operating system tools. Because the internal contents are heavily compressed and serialized specifically for hardware rendering, the files are frequently massive and completely locked down without the right tools.

The most practical conversion target is extraction. Users want to extract the bundled contents into standard, editable formats. This means converting embedded engine textures into PNG or DDS, 3D meshes into OBJ or FBX, and internal audio into WAV or OGG. However, extracting compiled assets often strips away the original scene hierarchy, metadata, and custom shader configurations.

Because .ASSETS is a highly specific, proprietary archive format, standard online converters fail to process it. Drag and drop your file onto convert.guru to see what it is and convert it if supported. Our system can inspect the file headers to identify the specific engine build version. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your ASSETS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted ASSET, RESS, RESOURCE, GLOBALGAMEMANAGERS, LEVEL0, LEVEL2, UNITY DEFAULT RESOURCES, UNITY_BUILTIN_EXTRA, SPLIT2, SPLIT0, LEVEL1, LEVEL3 and DLL files.

The ASSETS Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ASSETS converter.
