The .ASD file extension primarily represents an AutoRecovery Snapshot generated by Microsoft Word. These files serve as a safety net, created automatically when the software crashes, power fails, or an error occurs before a user saves their DOCX document. Unlike standard documents, .ASD files are temporary binary containers stored in specific system directories (typically under AppData).
