About WBK files
A .wbk file is an automatic backup file generated by Microsoft Word. When the 'Always create backup copy' option is enabled in Word settings, the application saves the previous state of a DOC (Microsoft Compound format) or DOCX (ZIP format) file with the .wbk extension. This ensures you can recover your work if the original document becomes corrupted or accidentally overwritten. The main problem with .wbk files is their lack of universal support outside of the Microsoft Office ecosystem. Because they are disguised legacy Word documents, they cannot be natively viewed in web browsers, mobile document viewers, or basic text editors. Furthermore, sharing a .wbk file can cause confusion, as the recipient's computer may not associate the extension with Word by default. To guarantee accessibility and sharing, conversion is necessary. Convert to DOCX to restore the file to a standard, editable modern Word document format. For read-only archiving or sharing with non-Word users, convert to PDF.
Convert.Guru analyzes your WBK file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert WBK file to DOCX, BAK, BACKUP, OLD, TMP, TEMP, ARC, ZIP, TAR, GZ, 7Z or RAR, you can use Microsoft Word or similar software from the "Word Document Backup Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert SNAPSHOT, OLD, IMG, RESTORE, ISO, COPY, VMDK, TMP, VHD, BAK, ARCHIVE or BACKUP files to WBK, try Microsoft Word or another comparable tool in the "Word Document Backup Storage" category.
The WBK Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our WBK converter.
