About ARTWORK files
The .artwork file is predominantly a proprietary digital drawing project created by the Drawing Desk application. It is also occasionally used as a thumbnail format by Procreate or as a 3D rendering output by Artlantis. Under the hood, Drawing Desk .artwork files are typically ZIP archives containing the canvas data, layer hierarchies, and custom brush strokes required to reconstruct the digital painting. This proprietary nature is the biggest disadvantage of the format. Because the files contain app-specific rendering logic, they are completely locked into their native ecosystems and cannot be opened by standard image editors like Adobe Photoshop or typical web browsers. Without an active subscription or access to the original app on a mobile device, viewing the artwork is extremely challenging. Standard online converters consistently fail to process .artwork files because they lack the specific parsing logic to unpack and render these closed project containers. To make the file usable elsewhere, it is best to convert it to a universal target like PNG for lossless web use, JPG for sharing, or PDF for document storage. Keep in mind that converting a project file to a flat image format will result in the loss of individual layers and editability.
