The most historical definition is the Unix Archiver format, used to group files into a single archive (similar to TAR), often found in software development for static libraries or inside Debian DEB packages. However, in the modern consumer landscape, .AR is frequently encountered as a proprietary game data container for the Angel Game Engine (used in titles like MM1Racer) or as renamed ZIP/RAR archives for mobile games by companies like Asobimo, Inc.

Users often face friction because standard operating systems (Windows, macOS) cannot natively distinguish between these conflicting formats.
