About APE files
The .APE file extension primarily represents a Monkey's Audio lossless compressed audio file. A secondary use is for annotated DNA sequence files created by A Plasmid Editor (ApE). Monkey's Audio files offer excellent compression ratios, saving storage space without losing audio quality. However, this format has severe real-world disadvantages. The compression algorithm is highly symmetric, meaning it requires intense CPU processing power to decode during playback. Because of this high battery and processor drain, almost no portable audio players, smartphones, or modern car stereos natively support .APE. Furthermore, Apple devices and standard web browsers cannot open these files. If you have an .APE file used for genetics, it contains plasmid map data. Viewing this outside of specialized software often results in formatting errors. To solve these playback and compatibility limits, conversion is necessary. For audio archiving and lossless playback on nearly any device, convert .APE to FLAC. For web use or mobile devices with limited storage, convert to MP3 or AAC. For biology data, convert to standard FASTA or GBK formats. Drop your file here to view and convert it securely right in your browser.
