About AIFF files

The .AIFF file is an Audio Interchange File Format developed by Apple Inc. in 1988 based on Electronic Arts' IFF structure. It stores uncompressed, lossless pulse-code modulation (PCM) audio data. Audio professionals primarily use it for high-fidelity mixing and mastering on macOS platforms. You can open .AIFF files using Apple Logic Pro, Avid Pro Tools, or cross-platform players like VLC. For more background, see the Audio Interchange File Format Wikipedia page.

Despite its flawless audio quality, .AIFF presents severe disadvantages for everyday use. Because it stores raw PCM data, files consume approximately 10MB per minute of stereo audio. This massive footprint makes them entirely impractical for web streaming, email attachments, or mobile storage. Furthermore, .AIFF metadata support is historically inferior to its Windows equivalent, WAV, and many modern web browsers and non-Apple portable devices fail to play it natively.

To solve these problems, convert .AIFF based on your final requirement. For web distribution or mobile playback, convert to MP3 or AAC to drastically reduce size. To archive audio losslessly while saving disk space, convert to FLAC or ALAC. If you need raw audio editing compatibility on a Windows workstation, convert to WAV. Just drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software.
