Extract text from CMF files

The .cmf extension is a classic example of a "filename collision," where multiple unrelated software vendors chose the same three letters. Identifying your specific file type is the critical first step before conversion.
1. CA Software Change Manager Package (Most Common): Approximately 25% of these files are generated by CA Harvest Software Change Manager (now owned by Broadcom). These serve as software update packages. The primary constraint here is opacity; users cannot easily see the contents without the proprietary SCM client. However, because many are essentially ZIP archives in disguise, you may sometimes be able to rename the extension to ZIP and extract the contents, though this is not guaranteed for all versions.
2. Creative Music Format (High Conversion Intent): This is a legacy audio format developed by Creative Labs for the Sound Blaster card era. It relies on FM synthesis (similar to MIDI but with embedded instrument data). The biggest obstacle is that modern media players like Windows Media Player or iTunes cannot play these files. To listen to them today, you must convert them to MP3 or WAV. Converting to MIDI is also popular for musicians who want to edit the note data in a DAW.
3. Caligari trueSpace 3D Model: Users with older 3D assets might find .cmf files belonging to the now-defunct trueSpace software (acquired by Microsoft). These proprietary model files are locked out of modern tools like Blender or Autodesk Maya. Archival conversion to OBJ or FBX is necessary to preserve these 3D assets.
4. Game & Map Data: From X-COM: UFO Defense map files to CarryMap mobile offline maps, these are strictly proprietary binary data files. They generally cannot be converted to standard image formats (like JPG) without specialized game modding tools or the specific GIS software that created them.
