About ANS files
The .ANS file extension primarily serves three distinct functions. The most common type is ANSI text art, which stores text-based graphics using ANSI escape codes. These files were popular in the dial-up BBS (Bulletin Board System) era to add color, layout formatting, and rudimentary animation to terminal interfaces. Another major use case is the HotDocs Answer File. This file contains structured user input data (often in XML or binary format) used by HotDocs document automation software to populate complex legal or corporate templates. Additionally, .ANS files are frequently used by ANSYS engineering software to store heavy simulation results.
The main disadvantage of .ANS files is their severe lack of modern compatibility. Opening an ANSI art file in a standard text editor like Windows Notepad usually results in unreadable gibberish, as modern editors cannot parse the legacy escape sequences. Meanwhile, HotDocs files require expensive proprietary software subscriptions to process into final documents. ANSYS result files are heavy, highly specialized, and completely unreadable without the original engineering suite.
If you have an ANSI graphic, the best conversion targets are TXT (which strips the color codes for readable text), HTML (to render the colors in a browser), or raster images like PNG. HotDocs answer files are best exported to XML or DOCX. Standard online converters frequently fail to process .ANS files because they are either obsolete legacy standards or heavily locked into proprietary corporate ecosystems.
This is why convert.guru is the most pragmatic solution. Just drag and drop your file to identify the exact format, view its contents, and convert it when possible. Even if the file is a proprietary ANSYS binary or a compiled HotDocs archive, our system can inspect the headers, extract readable text strings, and determine if an underlying supported format (like XML) can be salvaged.
Convert.Guru analyzes your ANS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert ANS file to TXT, RTF, DOC, DOCX, ODT, PAGES, TEX, LATEX, MD, MARKDOWN, LOG or NFO, you can use HotDocs or similar software from the "ANSI Graphics and Form Data" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert PDF, DOC, ASC, TODO, NFO, MEMO, README, DOCX, JPG, TXT, NOTE or RTF files to ANS, try HotDocs or another comparable tool in the "ANSI Graphics and Form Data" category.
The ANS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ANS converter.
