About ANS files
The .ans file extension primarily represents ANSI Text Art, a legacy graphics format popularized during the Bulletin Board System (BBS) era of the 1980s and 90s. These files use ANSI X3.64 escape sequences to control cursor location and text color, creating intricate visuals using standard character sets (often CP437). Additionally, the extension is widely used by HotDocs for answer files containing user input for document automation, and by ANSYS for engineering simulation results.
Working with .ans files in a modern environment presents significant friction. Standard text editors like Notepad++ display the escape sequences as garbled "garbage" text (e.g., ←[1;31m) rather than the intended graphic, and modern operating systems lack native support for the requisite legacy code pages. For HotDocs and ANSYS users, the challenge is proprietary lock-in; viewing the data requires expensive software licenses or specific outdated viewer utilities.
To overcome these compatibility hurdles, conversion is the most practical solution.
For ANSI Art: Convert to PNG or GIF to preserve the visual render for web sharing, or to HTML to view it in a browser.
For HotDocs/Data: Convert to PDF or TXT to archive the answers in a human-readable format.
For Archiving: Use PDF/A to ensure long-term accessibility of simulation reports or automated document data without relying on the original generating software.
Convert.Guru analyzes your ANS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert ANS file to TXT, RTF, DOC, DOCX, ODT, PAGES, TEX, LATEX, MD, MARKDOWN, LOG or NFO, you can use TheDraw or similar software from the "ANSI Text Art / Answer File" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert PDF, DOC, ASC, TODO, NFO, MEMO, README, DOCX, JPG, TXT, NOTE or RTF files to ANS, try TheDraw or another comparable tool in the "ANSI Text Art / Answer File" category.
The ANS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ANS converter.
