About XVG files

An .xvg file is a text-based plot data file generated by the GROMACS (GROningen MAchine for Chemical Simulations) molecular dynamics package. It contains numerical data organized in columns, typically representing coordinates, energies, or other molecular properties over a simulated timeframe.

The format was originally designed to be parsed and visualized using Grace (also known as xmgrace), a 2D plotting tool built for Unix-like operating systems.

The primary disadvantage of the .xvg format is its strict reliance on legacy software. Grace is severely outdated and notoriously difficult to install on modern Windows or macOS machines. If you attempt to open an .xvg file in a standard text editor, you will be met with a massive wall of numbers cluttered with Grace-specific formatting tags (like @ and #), making it difficult to read or copy-paste the data cleanly.

To make this data usable, you must convert it. For data analysis and editing, convert your .xvg files to CSV or TXT. This strips the legacy formatting tags and allows seamless import into Microsoft Excel, R, or Python (Pandas). If you only need to view or publish the resulting graph, convert the file to PDF, PNG, or SVG.

Convert.Guru analyzes your XVG file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted TPR, XTC and RTP files.

The XVG Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XVG converter.
