About AEX files
The .AEX extension primarily identifies compiled plugin modules for Adobe After Effects. These files act as dynamic link libraries (similar to DLL on Windows) to add specialized visual effects, rendering capabilities, or automation tools to the host software. Because they are compiled binary executables, they are heavily restricted: they cannot be manually edited, are often locked to specific versions of After Effects, and require the paid Creative Cloud subscription to function. They are not media files and cannot be played in video players.
However, .AEX files may also be exported page files from OpenText ApplicationXtender, an enterprise document management system. These files wrap scanned documents or data in a proprietary container, making them inaccessible without the specific enterprise viewer. This proprietary lock-in can create major obstacles for sharing and archiving. For these documents, the ideal workflow is conversion to PDF (for universal viewing), TIFF (for high-fidelity archiving), or JPG (for quick web reference). Users simply need to identify which format they possess; plugins must be installed, while document exports should be converted to standard formats.
Convert.Guru analyzes your AEX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted FFX, ZIP, EXE, ZXP, RAR, PRFPSET, PDF, TXT, OFX, JPG, ENC, AEP and EXR files.
The AEX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our AEX converter.
