About OFX files
The .ofx file extension primarily represents an Open Financial Exchange data file. Based on the XML standard, it is widely used by banks, credit card companies, and financial institutions to transmit account statements and transaction histories. Less commonly, .ofx functions as an OpenFX video effects plugin used in professional video editing software.
Financial .ofx files are natively opened using personal finance applications like Quicken, GnuCash, or the legacy Microsoft Money. The plugin variant is executed by hosts like DaVinci Resolve.
The main disadvantage of the financial .ofx format is its rigidity. It lacks native support in standard spreadsheet software like Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets. Opening an .ofx file in a standard text editor reveals complex XML tags that are difficult to read and impossible to mathematically analyze without specialized software. Furthermore, it is tied to specific financial import protocols that many modern web-based accounting tools simply do not support.
To calculate totals, build charts, or manually analyze transactions, convert .ofx to CSV or XLSX. For importing into QuickBooks, convert to QBO. If you need to integrate the raw data into a custom application, converting to standard XML or JSON makes it easier to parse.
