Convert a file to AET
To convert other file formats to the "Video Project Template" file type, you need software like Adobe After Effects or a similar tool.
About AET files
The .AET file extension is an After Effects Template used by Adobe After Effects. It stores a pre-configured motion graphics project, including timeline settings, compositions, effects parameters, and layer structures. Designers use these files to reuse complex animations without starting from scratch. Under the hood, these files utilize the RIFX (Resource Interchange File Format) architecture.
You must use Adobe After Effects to natively open and edit these files. The .AET format is highly proprietary, complex, and locked strictly into the Adobe ecosystem. You cannot open it in a web browser, standard media player, or alternative video editors like DaVinci Resolve or Final Cut Pro. A major disadvantage is that these files require a paid Adobe subscription to access. Furthermore, these files do not contain the actual rendered video; they only hold project data and absolute file paths to linked external assets.
To make the content playable, the project must be rendered out to standard video formats like MP4 (H.264) or MOV (ProRes). If you just want to edit the template and save your progress, the software will output a standard AEP (After Effects Project) file.
Because .AET is a closed, proprietary project file, standard online converters fail to process it. They cannot replicate the proprietary Adobe rendering engine required to interpret the effects and output a video. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. convert.guru can inspect the file and show text or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your AET file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert AET file to MP4, AVI, MOV, WMV, FLV, WEBM, MKV, M4V, 3GP, OGV, ASF or RM, you can use Adobe After Effects or similar software from the "Motion Graphics Template Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MTS, MOV, RMVB, DIVX, RM, H264, TS, WMV, VOB, MP4, XVID or AVI files to AET, try Adobe After Effects or another comparable tool in the "Motion Graphics Template Storage" category.
The AET Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our AET converter.
