About AET files

A .aet file is an Adobe After Effects Template, a project file designed to generate new motion graphics compositions without overwriting the original source. Internally structured as a RIFX (Resource Interchange File Format eXtended) binary container, it stores layers, keyframes, effects, and composition timelines. Users typically encounter .aet files when downloading stock motion graphics or using shared team assets.

The catch is that .aet files are strictly proprietary; they cannot be opened by standard video players like VLC or edited in non-Adobe software. Furthermore, opening a .aet file in Adobe After Effects forces the project to open as "Untitled," compelling the user to save a new AEP file - a feature designed to prevent accidental template modification but confusing for new users.

For editing, the most common conversion is simply saving the file as a standard AEP project. For web distribution or client review, users must render the composition inside After Effects to MP4 (H.264) or WEBM. For high-quality archiving or broadcast, rendering to MOV (ProRes) or MXF is standard. Users without access to the Adobe Creative Cloud subscription cannot view or convert these files natively.

Convert.Guru analyzes your AET file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted AE, AEP, JPG, EXR and FFX files.
