To convert other file formats to the "Compositing Project File" file type, you need software like Adobe After Effects or a similar tool.
About AEPX files
.AEPX is an XML-based project file used by Adobe After Effects for motion graphics and visual effects compositing. It stores composition settings, layer properties, keyframes, and file paths to external media. Users typically open and edit .AEPX files using Adobe After Effects.
The main disadvantage of an .AEPX file is that it requires a costly Adobe Creative Cloud subscription to view. Furthermore, it only contains text-based instructions and file paths, not the actual video or audio data. If you share the file without bundling the linked assets, the project will immediately fail with "Media Offline" errors. Because it is an XML file, it can be parsed by scripts or version control systems, but it is entirely useless to a standard video player.
To view the actual video, you must render the project to standard target formats like MP4, MOV, or AVI. Be aware that rendering flattens the layers, meaning you lose the ability to edit individual effects or keyframes. If you only want a smaller, faster-saving project file, you should convert it to a standard AEP binary format.
Because .AEPX is a proprietary project file dependent on external assets located on a specific local hard drive, standard online video converters always fail to process it. Just drag and drop your file onto convert.guru to identify the format, view the raw XML code, and convert it when possible. If our analysis detects supported underlying text or embedded asset data, viewing the project structure or extracting text might still be possible.

The AEPX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our AEPX converter.
