About AE files

The .ae file extension is a rare and multi-faceted format primarily associated with AeroEngineer, a specialized tool for glider and airfoil design. These files contain aerodynamic data, coordinate sets, and flight simulation parameters used to model aircraft performance. Because this format is highly proprietary and niche, users often struggle to open it outside of the original MH-AeroTools ecosystem, making collaboration or data analysis in standard tools like Microsoft Excel impossible without conversion.

Secondary uses include game data files for the classic RPG Amulets & Armor (developed by United Software Artists), where the file stores level assets, scripts, or character definitions. In some security contexts, .ae is found as a truncated or variant extension for AES Encrypted files (normally aes), generated by AES Crypt.

For AeroEngineer files, the best conversion workflow involves exporting data points to CSV or TXT for use in MATLAB or spreadsheet software. For encrypted files, "conversion" is strictly decryption back to the original format using the correct password.

Convert.Guru analyzes your AE file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted AEP, FFX, AEPX, AEGRAPHIC, AET, AAE, ZIP, PRPROJ, MOGRT, MP4, RAR, AI and GIF files.

The AE Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our AE converter.
