The .ad_prt file extension is a proprietary 3D CAD part file used primarily by Alibre Design (formerly known as Geomagic Design). These files store parametric solid models, including sketches, feature histories, and precise boundary representation (B-rep) geometry. Engineers and product designers use .ad_prt files to create individual components that later assemble into larger mechanical designs. To natively edit these files, you need a paid license for Alibre Design or a compatible enterprise CAD suite like Autodesk Inventor.
Sharing .ad_prt files presents significant challenges. Because the format is closed and proprietary, clients or manufacturers cannot open the file without purchasing specialized CAD software. Natively, the file cannot be viewed in standard web browsers or basic image viewers. Users must convert these files to neutral 3D formats to collaborate. The best conversion targets are STEP (.stp) or IGES (.igs) for sharing solid geometry with other CAD platforms like SolidWorks or AutoCAD.
