About CPGZ files

A .CPGZ file is a Compressed CPIO Archive, created by applying GZIP compression to a CPIO archive container. This format is native to Unix and Linux systems (including macOS) but presents significant challenges for general users.

Typically, users encounter this format due to the infamous "macOS Archive Utility Loop," where the operating system attempts to unzip a corrupted file but instead re-compresses it into a .CPGZ file. Furthermore, .CPGZ files are not natively supported by Windows File Explorer, requiring third-party tools like 7-Zip or PeaZip just to view the contents. Even on compatible systems, the two-step structure (Compressed Wrapper > Archive Container > Files) can be cumbersome compared to modern formats.
