A .YMAP file is primarily a Game Map Entity file used by Grand Theft Auto V (GTA V) and the Rockstar Advanced Game Engine (RAGE). These files function as the "blueprints" for the game world, defining the precise coordinates, rotation, and properties of objects (props, buildings, vehicles) placed within the map. Unlike the 3D models themselves (stored in YDR or YDD files), the YMAP simply tells the game engine where to place these existing models.
For modders and developers, the raw .YMAP file presents a significant challenge: it is a compiled binary format that cannot be edited in standard text editors like Notepad++. To modify map placements - such as moving a building or removing a prop - users must first convert the binary YMAP to a human-readable XML format. This XML file can then be edited and re-compiled back to YMAP for use in the game. Additionally, users often need to convert YMAP data into standard 3D formats like OBJ or FBX to visualize map mods in software like Blender or 3ds Max.
A secondary, less common use of the .ymap extension is for legacy mind map files created by MindGenius. These files store brainstorming diagrams and project plans using a Microsoft Compound File structure.
