About SXD files

The .SXD extension primarily identifies a legacy StarOffice XML Drawing file, the predecessor to the modern standard ODG (OpenDocument Graphics). Originally created by StarOffice (developed by Sun Microsystems) and early versions of OpenOffice.org, these files contain vector graphics, charts, and illustrations.

The main disadvantage of this format is its age; it was largely deprecated in favor of the ODF standard around 2005. Consequently, modern suites like Microsoft Office and even some web-based viewers cannot open .SXD files directly, leaving your data locked in an obsolete container. While LibreOffice can usually import them, formatting errors are common.

For preservation and accessibility, it is highly recommended to convert these drawings to PDF (for sharing), SVG (for scalable web use), or ODG (for continued editing).

Note: About 10% of .SXD files are actually ArcScene Documents created by Esri ArcGIS. These are complex 3D GIS project files that reference external geospatial data. They are proprietary and generally cannot be converted without the original ArcGIS software and the associated data sources.

The SXD Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SXD converter.
