The .XMF file extension is heavily fragmented, primarily functioning as a 3D avatar accessory mesh for the IMVU virtual world, or as an eXtensible Data Model and Format (XDMF) file for scientific computing. In gaming, it stores 3D character meshes, geometry, and materials for IMVU, Second Life, or legacy titles like the X-Universe series. In data science, it uses XML to describe metadata while pointing to separate HDF5 files that contain the actual heavy datasets.
Working with .XMF files is difficult due to their proprietary or interdependent nature. IMVU meshes are locked to the platform's ecosystem and cannot be natively opened by standard 3D modeling tools like Blender without specialized, often unstable community plugins. XDMF files are functionally useless if separated from their companion data files. Furthermore, legacy audio files using the Extensible Music Format are completely obsolete and unsupported by modern media players.
To make these files usable, conversion is mandatory. For 3D workflows, convert IMVU or Cal3D meshes to universally supported OBJ or FBX formats. Note that while geometry is preserved, proprietary rigging or skeleton data is typically lost during translation.
