About X3DV files

The .X3DV file format is the Classic VRML encoding of the Extensible 3D (X3D) standard. Developed by the Web3D Consortium, it describes 3D scenes, objects, lighting, and animation using a text-based syntax inherited from the older VRML97 standard. Unlike the XML-based X3D format, .X3DV files use curly braces and fields, making them human-readable but harder for modern XML parsers to ingest directly.

While .X3DV is an ISO standard, it is a common headache in modern workflows. Most contemporary 3D engines and web browsers (via WebGL) prefer GLTF or binary formats. Opening a .X3DV file often requires specialized viewers like FreeWRL or older plugins that are no longer supported by mainstream browsers. Additionally, because it is an uncompressed text format, complex scenes with dense geometry can result in massive file sizes that are slow to parse. For web deployment, converting to GLTF or GLB is highly recommended for performance. For 3D printing, you must convert the scene geometry to STL. For editing in tools like Blender, converting to OBJ or standard X3D (XML) is often required.

Convert.Guru analyzes your X3DV file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted X3D, FH and TG4 files.

The X3DV Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our X3DV converter.
