About X3DV files

An .x3dv file is an Extensible 3D (X3D) graphics file formatted with the Classic VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language) syntax. The Web3D Consortium developed this format to represent interactive 3D scenes, including geometry, lighting, materials, and animations. It acts as an evolutionary bridge, combining the modern node capabilities of the X3D standard with the older, plain-text syntax of the legacy WRL format.

You can open and edit these files using specialized 3D authoring tools like X3D-Edit, or view them with standalone utilities such as view3dscene. Some general 3D suites like Blender can import them if the appropriate community addons are installed.

The main disadvantage of the .x3dv format is its limited software compatibility. While X3D is an ISO standard, the Classic VRML encoding used by .x3dv is a niche, plain-text structure that lacks the universal support of the XML-based x3d file format. Modern game engines and web-based 3D viewers will generally fail to load .x3dv files natively, and standard online converters struggle to parse the proprietary VRML-style syntax without heavy, dedicated 3D libraries.

To use this 3D data in modern workflows, users typically need to convert .x3dv files to GLTF or GLB for web deployment, OBJ for standard static meshes, or FBX for importing into game engines like Unity or Unreal Engine. Keep in mind that while geometry and textures convert reliably, complex interactive behaviors (like sensors or interpolator routing) are usually lost when moving away from the X3D ecosystem.

Just drag and drop your file to see what it is and convert it if supported. Although this syntax is specialized, convert.guru can still identify the file format, inspect the file structure, and display the internal plain-text content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your X3DV file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted X3D, FH and TG4 files.

The X3DV Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our X3DV converter.
